Increase connections count on ec2

I have been running a full node on EC2 for a while now and the connection count stands at 8. I have added 4 nodes manually and it went to 12 but now down to 10 connections.

Port 8333 is widely accessible and I can connect to this node from another one. Any ideas how to increase the number of connections? Would the upnp option help in this case?

(Why?)
