Lightning Hood Weekly Round-Up for the Week Starting 5/13/19

Lightning Network News and Good Reads from the Week

.) You can now install ZeroTier on your Nodl allowing you to use things like Zap Mobile anywhere you are, use your whirlpool GUI to access your mixes, use a browser to access the nodl GUI, use RTL, use BTCPAY, or anything you can usually use when you’re on your local network

.) RTL gets updated to v0.3.2-beta that fixes an issue on failing user authentication for ‘DEFAULT’ authtype and added open channel control on the ‘Peers’ page, for ease of use

.) Microsoft is launching the first decentralized infrastructure implementation by a major tech company that is built directly on the bitcoin blockchain. The open source project, called Ion, deals with the underlying mechanics of how networks talk to each other. For example, if you log onto Airbnb using Facebook, a protocol deals with the software that sends the personal information from your social profile to that external service provider. In this case, Ion handles the decentralized identifiers, which control the ability to prove you own the keys to this data

.) You are now able to pay with bitcoin at a series of retailers through a partnership between Flexa, a payments startup, and Gemini. It works by piggy-backing on the digital scanners that many big retailers use to accept phone-based payments from their apps and from digital wallets like Apple Pay

.) Gab’s CEO Andrew Torba is looking to embed bitcoin into Gab’s design

.) Muun is a new non-custodial Lightning wallet. It requires zero channel configuration: all you need to do is make sure you have bitcoins in your wallet and scan the Lightning invoice you want to pay. Muun will automatically recognize it as an off-chain invoice and guide you all the way through the payment

.) The recently reintroduced Token Taxonomy Act (TTA) will create a de minimis tax exemption for crypto transactions under $600. The de minimis tax exemption stipulates that if a crypto owner experiences a capital gain up to $600 of crypto, then that owner is not required to report the gain to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the United States’ tax authority

.) The Nodl team releases software v0.0.7a with the latest LND, RTL and option to go full tor for bitcoind

.) Bitrefill summarized all of the exciting new tech coming to the Lightning Network

.) Amazon has been granted a patent for various techniques to build a proof-of-work (PoW) cryptographic system similar to those used by blockchains such as bitcoin. First filed in December 2016 and awarded Tuesday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the patent outlines how Merkle trees can be generated as a solution to a proof-of-work challenge, among other benefits

.) The team behind Blue Wallet has another awesome update for users this week

.) Tor makes it easier for users setting up Lightning nodes by circumventing certain thorny networking hurdles while also providing a layer of privacy
