Hyperledger unveils aries, decentralized identity (did) infrastructure

Hyperledger, a multi-project open source distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform hosted by the Linux Foundation, has announced the launch of Aries, a shared infrastructure of tools that facilitate the exchange of data stored on different blockchains, according to a blog post on May 14, 2019.

Hyperledger Aries Fosters Interoperability

In a bid to promote interoperability between heterogeneous blockchains and make it easier for projects to create, transmit and store verifiable digital credentials, Hyperledger has launched Aries, a shared, reusable and interoperable tool kit.

Per the team, Hyperledger Aries is a shared infrastructure of tools that supports peer-to-peer messaging in numerous scenarios, enables the exchange of blockchain-based data and promote interoperable interactions between a vast array of blockchain networks.

Specifically, Hyperledger will “provide code for p2p interaction, secrets management, verifiable information exchange and secure messaging for various decentralized systems.”

That’s not all, the team also claims that Aries can:

“[…] foster frictionless interoperability in support of ongoing standards work, while also extending the applicability of technologies developed within Indy beyond its current community components from Hyperledger stack into a single, effective business solution.”

Not a Blockchain

Interestingly, the team has made it clear that Aries is neither a blockchain nor an application, but simply an infrastructure that facilitates peer-to-peer interactions between blockchains.

Hyperledger Aries comes with numerous components that enable it to achieve its aim. Some of the intricate features of Hyperledger Aries include a blockchain interface layer (resolver) whose primary objective is to create and sign blockchain transactions, a cryptographic wallet for storing highly sensitive information, an encrypted messaging system for off-chain communications between clients using multiple transport protocols and more.

According to the team, the generic interface of Hyperledger Aries is very flexible and can be used to build a pluggable method using other decentralized identity (DID) resolvers such as Hyperledger fabric, Ethereum, and other DID method resolvers.

The primary objective of Hyperledger Aries is to provide users with a robust platform for storing and exchanging data related to blockchain-based identity.

The team has hinted that the upcoming versions of the Hyperledger Aries will support more functionalities such as Decentralized Key management (DKMS).

“We also hope plan to have a scalable, searchable storage layer which can store data needed for identity maintenance, including health records, pictures and other personal information.”

It’s worth noting that the Hyperledger team have been working hard to make their platform as robust as possible.

Earlier in January 2019, BTCManager informed that Hyperledger had launched the Fabrik 1.4 LTS upgrade, as part of plans to fully establish its network.
