The Inaugural CEO Fireside Chat Series: Development and Challenges of Public Blockchains: A Conversation with BUMO Public blockchain has experienced rapid development in the past couple of years. Besides bitcoin and Ethereum, which are the most well-known public blockchain platforms in production, another dozen of public blockchain platforms become available for mass DApp development. However, adoption and integration with public blockchain platforms face multiple challenges, including: Limited Privacy – Information on public chain is not encrypted therefore sensitive data cannot be saved on the chain. Scalability – Due to different choices of consensus protocol, the transaction speed can be very different. However, nothing can meet business need yet without the help of layer 2 efficacy solution. Security – Security issues in smart contract has incurred humongous loss to users, investors, exchanges and projects without a real fundamental solution. Other Challenges – including limited tooling, governance framework, and insufficient architecture design to meet certain application scenarios. 2018 is considered as Year One for blockchain-as-a-service (BaaS). More business leaders realize the importance of the blockchain technology. However, without proper solution of those above challenges, it is infeasible to trigger meaningful mass adoption of the technology. He is leading the community and ecosystem building in North America(US and Canada) for BUMO Foundation. He is an active investor in ICO and 20+ startups, and has taught an MIT class on cryptocurrency. Mr. Lau's past investments include BladeLogic, Endeca, WaveSmith, Netli, Berkeley Design Automation, among others. Will Knight Will Knight is MIT Technology Review’s Senior Editor for Artificial Intelligence. He covers the latest advances in AI and related fields, including machine learning, automated driving, and robotics. Will joined MIT Technology Review in 2008 from the UK science weekly New Scientist magazine. He is a frequent guest on TV and radio shows. Dennis Zhang Dennis is CEO and co-founder of VitaData, a decentralized health data kickstarter powered by blockchain. Dennis is also the architect of the token economics and held PhD in Economics from Boston University. He is an entrepreneur with 10 years of experience in data algorithm and analytics and also an expert in digital health, smart wear, blockchain and AI. Tong Shen Tong Shen is the co-founder and CTO of Liaoyuan, a social networking platform for entrepreneurs, investors, and industry professionals to efficiently acquire valuable resources and connect with each other. Tong held Masters in Computer Science from Brandeis University. He is a serial entrepreneur with experience in social network, blockchain and app development.
