Violet Lim, co-founder and creator of recalls the moment she decided to take matchmaking to the next level.
“According to our research, around 25% of people meet their partner online, and it continues to grow every year. There used to be a stigma attached to online dating but since the arrival of apps like Tinder, those stigmas have all but vanished.”
Lim continues expounding on what she believes are the rules of online dating, and the emergence of a platform like .
“Since I’m involved in the matchmaking business, many of my friends have come to me seeking advice over the years. My business relies on discretion, safety and security, and we have seen many successful matches that last; however, that clearly isn’t enough when it comes to people forging ahead, quite recklessly, with their supposed future partners.”
“I had a friend from college who had utilized a dating service around 18 months ago, and she believed that all the signs thus far proved a successful match. She’s pretty independant, quite intellectual but had limited dating experience after college as work took up most of her time. I caught up with her a few months ago, and her story proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that the need for a secure, online dating environment had not only arrived, but was, in fact, overdue!”
Lim continues that her friend had spent over a year cultivating what she believed was the relationship. The dating site, a well-known one that frequently advertises their services on various search engines, is standard issue with the same warnings about scammers: do not provide ABC to strangers etc.
Lim says her friend didn’t count the new man in her life as a stranger, and as time wore on, she shared many close details with her online partner. Naturally the relationship moved off the platform itself where skype, phone calls, daily messaging and so on were used. Mentally the more connections we have to an individual we have never met, the safer we feel.
“She was obviously in love, she had seen him via skype video, they had long conversations into the night. It pretty much looked like a great match on the surface,” comments Lim.
Her friend mentions that “James” mentioned his budding business and told her he wanted to expand. He said he saw a future for them but needed financial security before he proposed. Lim’s friend saw this as a gallant gesture i.e. he wanted to look after her, and ignoring all the warning signs, invested US$150 000 into his business.
What’s different about this scheme was that “James” didn’t disappear immediately. He kept in contact as usual but that contact waned over the next 6 weeks until he did the disappearing act.
At first she was worried but as time went on, she realized she’d been scammed. Everything from his name to his business account and website had been faked.
Lim goes silent for a moment and one can see that she’s torn between distress and outrage on her friend’s behalf.
