the easiest way for game developers to generate revenue

API is one of the most common tech buzzwords — and one of the least understood. APIs, or application programmer interfaces, are simply a way for different servers to talk to each other — yet, this basic idea is already revolutionizing such diverse areas as digital commerce, banking, and health care. In other words, an API is a way for a server to accept requests from other apps and respond to them: It’s the way digital systems communicate and fetch data from each other. Gaming is yet another industry where APIs have huge potential — especially when combined with recent innovations in blockchain technology.

APIs in gaming: the basics

In the coming era of Web 3.0, no app, service, or platform will be able to survive in isolation: Full interoperability is the key to success. All digital product must be integrated with others: For instance, when you book a hotel, you should be able to pay in one click, using your favorite payment tool or mobile wallet, the booking must instantly be added to your calendar, and the money you’ve paid should ideally be recorded in your personal finance app.

The first APIs were provided by eBay and Salesforce almost 20 years ago, and since then, the API economy has been growing dramatically: At present, there are over 16,000 APIs.

One industry exploring the potential of APIs particularly actively is gaming. Platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, and Google Play Center all offer API kits that help enhance the gaming experience. Thanks to such tools, developers can add the possibility of live streams, instant messages, in-game rewards, picture- and video-sharing from games on social media, automatic translations, and much more.

Transforming the concept of in-game currency

There’s much more to APIs in gaming than live streams, however. PixelBit is a new blockchain-enabled project that endeavours to transform in-game economies and merge them with the real-world economy via a simple API. To achieve this, PixelBit will introduce its own token (PXB) that adheres to the Ethereum ERC20 standard. PXB will act both as a universal, cross-platform in-game currency and a real cryptocurrency that can be stored in all major Ethereum wallets, traded on cryptocurrency exchanges, and used to pay for goods and services.

At present, micro-transactions in games are handled using virtual in-game currencies such as gemstones, gold bars, credits, etc. Many games use more than one virtual currency, often awarded to players for performing various tasks, reaching new levels, and so on. The same units are used to buy in-game artifacts, such as weapons or skins. Some games have highly developed virtual economies, but they all share the same characteristic: Their in-game currency is game-specific — it’s worthless outside of the game. Until now, there has never been a cross-game solution that unites the economies of different games and make their currencies interoperable.

Taking care of all your game transaction needs

PixelBit tokens (PXB) are an elegant and efficient solution to this issue. Thanks to the API provided, game developers will be able to integrate PXB as the currency for any particular game easily and quickly. Afterward, the PixelBit system will handle all the steps involved in in-game transactions: block-mining, recording data about each exchange, transferring tokens from one user to another, and sending them to an external crypto wallet, if the user so wishes. The possibility to use PXB tokens outside of a given game will be the main driver of their adoption — and a great advantage for the developers who choose to use the API. PXB enabled games allow developers to implement lucrative incentives for players, such as earning PXB tokens for completing certain tasks in-game, which will increase the overall playtime by providing gamers with the possibility to earn passive income. Indeed, gamers will be motivated to play more and complete more transactions in a game that awards them real money that they can use outside the game. As the use of PXB tokens increases, so too will their market value, meaning that gaming companies that hold PXB tokens will have access to a growing amount of liquid capital.

The PixelBit API kit will be available to the select partners starting from April 2019 in preparation for the main round of the crowd sale. More information is available at https://pixelbit.cc/
