Square, mobile payment company based in San Francisco, California, has launched its new Square In-App Payments Software Development Kit (SDK), which makes it easier for developers to charge customers and extends the company’s payment processing capabilities to mobile apps.

The Square In-App Payments SDK allows developers to take payments from users using just a few lines of code. It supports traditional credit and debit cards, as well as both Google Pay and Apple Pay. According to the announcement, developers can also use the SDK to securely save payment card information of customers for further transactions.

Square Chief Product Officer, Adam Robinson, said:

“With this SDK, Square took care of a lot of the heavy lifting of storing card information, processing transactions and more. Using Square for payments alongside sending pickup orders for fulfillment into Square’s Point of Sale, reduces complexity and means that Pepper can implement apps quicker, with less fuss for merchants.”

The SDK makes Square the only omnichannel platform with first-party products that provide an end-to-end payments experience across in-person, web, and mobile app transactions. Using one platform for payments, both developers and sellers minimize the complexity, security, and compliance of managing payments across channels.

Developer Lead at Square, Carl Perry, commented on the initiative:

“With the introduction of in-app mobile payments to the Square platform, developers now have a complete, omnichannel payments solution for all their payment needs. From software to hardware to services, Square offers a complete payments experience all in one cohesive open platform. Even better, developers and sellers can manage all their payments across in-store, mobile and online all in one place.”

The new In-App Payments SDK has already been beta-tested by a particular group of customers. Among them is PepperHQ, a London-based company that develops apps for the hospitality sector.

Adam Robinson, Chief Product Officer at PepperHQ, said:

“With this SDK, Square took care of a lot of the heavy lifting of storing card information, processing transactions and more. Using Square for payments alongside sending pickup orders for fulfilment into Square’s Point of Sale, reduces complexity and means that Pepper can implement apps quicker, with less fuss for merchants.”

He added:

“The Square In-App Payments SDK is a slicker implementation than other options in the market and felt frictionless from the beginning. We were able to customize the look and feel of the flow so that it looks the way our clients want but still feels native to the app so its trustworthy and honest.”

The service is currently available for iOS, Android, and Flutter in the United States, Canada, UK, Australia, and Japan.

Square to Encourage Crypto Innovation

Square is best known for its offline payments solutions that are very popular with small business owners and developers. The company made it possible for all users of its Cash App from all the states of the U.S. to trade and buy Cryptocurrency. For many traders it was really a long-awaited announcement which opened new opportunities and increased the company’s popularity.

In October, Square decided to open-source its Cryptocurrency cold storage technology, designed to support trading through its Cash app. Since then, the source code, software development kit (SDK), and documentation for the company’s cold storage solution has been accessible on Github’s repositories.

#216 Brian Platz & Flip Filipowski: FlureeDB – A Scalable Blockchain-Based Graph Database

Blockchain technologies are changing the way we think about data archival and storage. For instance, most database systems can only capture the current state of a data set. This means we must rely on secondary backup systems to ensure historical data can remain accessible, a stark contrast from what the most basic of blockchains provide out of the box. Database systems that offer immutability and historical context for data would be greatly beneficial for companies as it would make internal and external audits much less costly and time-intensive.

We’re delighted to bring you an interview with Flip Filipowski and Brian Platz. Flip is a veteran entrepreneur whose career spans 50 years, having worked for and founded some of the world’s largest software companies of the 80’s and 90’s. He is also the CEO of SilkRoad Equity and a Founding Partner of Tally Capital. Brian’s background includes having founded A List Appart in 1994, which is among the oldest and most influential web development blogs, and SilkRoad Technologies.

Flip and Brian join us to talk about their new company, Fluree. Their product, FlureeDB, is a scalable graph database which provides the benefits of blockchain technologies, such as immutability, replayability and fault tolerance. Currently, in development, the goal for FlureeDB is to support various consensus rules based on the network configuration: private systems, federated (or consortium) clusters, and fully decentralized public networks.

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • Flip and Brian’s respective backgrounds and entrepreneurial ventures
  • How blockchain will disrupt most major companies that exist today
  • FlureeDB and the problem it is trying to solve
  • How FlureeDB improves compliance procedures for enterprise
  • How FlureeDB can address some of the challenges ahead with regards to GDPR
  • FlureeDB’s technical infrastructure and elementary components
  • The different consensus modes and scalability properties of FlureeDB
  • Why they chose to structure the company as a Public Benefit Corporation
  • FlureeDB’s development roadmap
