It’s like owning a share of stock – the value can go up or down. A company can go bankrupt, it’s shares can then become worthless. If bitcoin fails to compete well with fiat or other altcoins it could likewise become worthless. (By contrast, something like gold is probably not going to become worthless even though its value fluctuates constantly like bitcoin).
Mr. Rabahy’s advice is good: if you need to put food on the table, by all means sell your BTC. If not, do some research and see if you can find a better alternative. Hint: In essence you can speak of the value of dollars/euro/yen/etc fluctuating relative to bitcoin, instead of the other way around. They also can become worthless in the future, as historical examples of fiat currencies prove. So consider that before selling any bitcoin just so you can have more fiat.
