Name Bazaar and the New ENS Registrar – district0x

How the ENS upgrade affects Name Bazaar users

On May 4th, the two year anniversary of the launch of the ENS temporary registrar, the ENS team successfully deployed a broad array of improvements and with it the new, permanent registrar.

Shortly after deployment, some users started to report issues when reclaiming names from open auctions on Name Bazaar. After a quick investigation the root of the issue was determined. In short, the Name Bazaar auction contracts include a function to check if the offerer is the owner of name. This means checking ENS ownership as well as registrar ownership. With our contracts still pointed at the original data, the contracts are querying the new registrar thinking it’s the old one.

We immediately reached out to the ENS team to report this issue and discuss how to resolve. A huge thank you to Nick Johnson, who was quick to hop on a call with us and presented a solution. The fix requires deploying a new contract which will allow the existing Name Bazaar contracts to query the old registrar, enabling users to reclaim their names and then migrate to the new registrar or release the names to reclaim their ETH.

We will be working together with the ENS team to create the new contract and a full test suite to ensure its proper functionality. We estimate this will take 2–4 weeks to complete. We will be taking Name Bazaar offline during this time to avoid any further confusion for users as the necessary upgrades are prepared. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.
