The company Lightning Labs, one of the major developers of solutions for the scaling technology of the Lightning Network, released the first desktop application for the main network.
Previously, the desktop version of the worked with a test network, in which , which have no real value, circulate. The new version of the application for the first time works in the main network, that is, it can be used to send and receive real Bitcoins. At the same time, users can fully control their Bitcoins.
In the a blog dedicated to the new application, which was created by developers Tankred Hase and Valentine Wallace, they said:
“Driving this release is a complete commitment to scaling the principles that was built on: privacy, security, and self-determination. For that we need to go beyond custodial solutions and enthusiast guides and deliver a great user experience for everyone.”
There are other wallets with Lightning support that work with real , including Bluewallet, Zap, and Zeus. But Lightning Labs, originally founded by the creators of Lightning Technology, is perhaps the largest company to release a technology-enabled application for the main network. The application runs on devices with MacOS, Windows and Linux.
At the same time, the developers noted that, although the works with the main network, it is still intended for “advanced users” who want to try out the promising technology. The risk of losing money still exists, as the Lightning Network is still in the testing phase.
Another important part of the release is that the application uses Neutrino’s “light client” technology, which requires storing a much smaller amount of data to authenticate transactions. Although there are other lightweight technologies, Neutrino is considered one of the most confidential solutions. In 2017, Lightning Labs introduced a for the Lightning Network with a graphical interface, which at that time was supported only by the Lightning Labs’ released light client, Neutrino.
In the future, Lightning Labs plans to release a version for mobile devices.
“[The release] also represents an important stepping stone towards mobile while we continue to invest in performance and stability,” Hase and Wallace wrote. “We’re working as quickly as we can to get our mainnet iOS and Android apps out soon.”
Last month, Lightning Labs released a solution to simplify accepting payments in , which will give Lightning Network users the ability to receive more without having to open and close a new payment channel.
