The price of bitcoin has grown from about $1000 at the beginning of this year to currently over 15 000 US dollars. Just in October one bitcoin cost around R60 000 in rands, now it hovers at around R240 000 and R250 000. Similar to markets the bitcoin responds to developments, and the recent surge is speculated to be due to the announcement by two global markets that have announced their intention to legitimatize it as an asset class for mainstream investors.
