Is marble addictive? – Leo van den Berge –

I started marbling cards 84 days ago and I can’t stop. I marbled 600+ cards so far. Well ok, I didn’t marble all of them myself. I poached some and I traded some for other NFT’s. Oh yeah, I also bought cards on Opensea.

Now: why is it that I am doing this? How does a grown up, sensible person end up in this situation? Maybe i can answer that intriguing question by going into some more detail on what this is actually all about.

First: what does a marblecard look like? Here’s some examples:

Some cards marbled from gamespot.com

At the moment there are about 20 websites that can be marbled. Among these are sites like github.com, nationalgeographic.com and medium.com (oh yes!). So there’s a first reason for my addiction: marblecards are beautiful pieces of digital art.

How does marbling work? Hmmm…. ‘easy’ enough. Just buy some ETH. Put it in a wallet. Install MetaMask plugin (or Trust wallet on mobile). Go to marble.com. Look up one of the supported sites. Go there, find a page you like. Copy the url. Go back to marble.cards. Press ‘Create New Card’. Paste in the url. Hope that nobody else beat you in marbling this url, cause each unique url can only be marbled once. Pay the 0.011 eth fee (about $2). Find the card in the online auction. Price drops from 2 ETH to 0.08 ETH in 12 hours. If nobody buys the card from auction (this is called poaching), the card is yours to claim at no cost. If somebody does poach the card, you get 30% of the sale price.

Second reason for my addiction: it feels like i own something very unique and special every time i create a marble card. Cards are at the moment not so easy to get by. I managed to take all of the above hurdles and that makes me feel leading edge. One day creating cards may become ‘easy access’ (e.g. by using credit card / fiat). By that time early adaptors may have very very special and (hopefully) valuable collections.

What can you do with marble cards? At the moment you can battle, sell, trade, collect or invest in them. On the marble discord server themed battles are organized and experimented with. Submitted cards battle one on one. People vote which card they like most. If your card gets most votes it wins the battle. The winner usually gets a valuable Origin or gold card. In a while marble.com plan to support a Battle Arena housing various Leagues. Voting will be at a small cost and predicting winning cards will be rewarded. League owners and card submitters will be able to earn from this as well. Proximate cards in each League battle each other. When a card wins it climbs to the top of the League. Leagues will be NFT’s and can as such be sold/traded as well. Early investors in marble cards are actively involved and consulted in all of these ideas.

Third reason for my addiction: marble.cards involves early users in future ideas around the product. In a way this makes me feel part of a team with a collective goal. No idea is too crazy to discuss.

How to trade/sell cards? There are several ways already to sell or trade marble cards. First is an internal marketplace on marble.cards. Second is opensea.com. Opensea.com is advertised as ‘the largest trading place for crypto collectibles’. Third is to connect with another collector on discord and simply agree to swap cards for cards or for other NFT’s. Here comes in some trust. This is weird. I found myself being able to fully trust people i have never seen. People i know from the discord only. We agree on a swap. I send my card to them and they send their card to me. Always worked. Feels special.

Fourth reason for an addiction: marble.cards has -just like many other NFT’s- a close and trustworthy discord community.

You still reading? Then congratulations! Maybe marbling is something for you. Send me your eth address and you may be selected as the winner of one of these 4 great Medium marble cards!
