How I Went from Serial Entrepreneur to Crypto Cheerleader in Six Months

How I Went from Serial Entrepreneur to Crypto Cheerleader in Six Months

During the 10 years I worked as an entrepreneur, I thought I was the luckiest guy in startup land.

I got to set my own schedule, didn’t commute to an office or have to deal with politics among coworkers.

But I didn’t realize how lonely I was until I started working for GiveCrypto.org about 6 months ago. Looking back on my first few weeks at the non-profit, based in Coinbase’s offices in San Francisco, I am somewhat embarrassed to admit that I was genuinely worried about working a “traditional” 9–5 job.

Working from home made me forget how much I enjoyed working with smart, engaged people. While I admit I’m probably still in the honeymoon period, I find myself looking forward to the once dreaded office commute and spending time with the Coinbase team.

Lately I’ve started to wonder how I became such a happy worker-bee; something that I thought was impossible after working for myself for so long. I think it’s because, and pardon the cheerleading, I genuinely believe in what Coinbase has built and the mind-boggling potential of it all.

Many believe that blockchain will impact money as significantly as the internet has impacted information. I am definitely drinking the Satoshi kool-aid: that crypto can help free people from oppressive governments and corporations and help us take back ownership of our finances.

The energy and excitement that comes along with this is invigorating.

A big part of the motivation I get from working on GiveCrypto comes from the team I get to work alongside. Coinbase has hired some of the most impressive people I’ve ever met. Not only are they frighteningly intelligent and obviously passionate about making an impact, but they all seem to have rather charming quirks.

Said another way, they are a bunch of weirdos, but in the best way. The lunchtime and happy hour conversations are raucous and entertaining. It is a privilege to be able to spend time with these people.

But the biggest reason I am so happy with this role has to do with the work I am doing at GiveCrypto. While it’s still early days, we’ve already impacted the lives of people around the world and have some very exciting projects in the works. Thankfully, too, Coinbase employees are keenly interested in our work and generous with their time.

Our mission to help people in need by distributing cryptocurrency aligns closely with Coinbase’s mission of creating an open financial system for the world. Because of this, I’ve received help on all sorts of matters from some of the smartest people in the space.

The support, expertise, enthusiasm and altruism of the people involved in both GiveCrypto and Coinbase is infectious. Six months ago I was skeptical of how I’d feel coming back into a normal workplace, and now I wouldn’t trade it for all the missed commutes or flexible hours I enjoyed before.
