Ethuoft 2019: learn what you can’t

UofT Blockchain Group hosted an engaging 36-hour hackathon over the weekend. Students and Ethereum enthusiasts had the opportunity to experiment with Ethereum Smart Contracts using Solidity, build their first DaPP ( decentralized application), and win invaluable prizes.

Alex Kozin, one of EthUofT’s first-time hackers, had this to say about his experience.

This weekend I was excited to participate in ETHUofT – a student-focused hackathon aimed at giving participants the necessary skills to contribute to the Ethereum ecosystem.

Learning something new is always challenging. Sometimes you feel overwhelmed thinking about competing in the field you have no experience in. Blockchain and cryptocurrencies complexity makes it even more challenging.

I decided to accept that challenge. I figured that I am not in school, and my only consequence here is a missed opportunity to learn something completely new. That is the main purpose of the hackathon: Learn What You Can’t

And I began to learn. With no previous experience or substantial documentation, just using the resources provided at ETHUofT and with the help of mentors. During the hackathon we got insight into how blockchains work; what are the advantages they provide, the challenges they face and got to know a lot of top people from the world of crypto:

Arman Solakian from CryptoCanucks is an amazing enthusiast with a lot of knowledge in the field, talking with him makes me feel inspired. If you still have questions like “Why bitcoin is so popular?”, “Why everybody still talks about crypto?” or “Who the heck is Satoshi?” (Spoiler: Satoshi is Canadian) – head to www.cryptocanucks.com , these guys rock!

Govind Mohan from DataX.one is a wonderful person who helped us a lot on the hackathon. Doing a great job working on the new way of interacting with the Internet, he is the major reason why we stayed in and didn’t give up completely from the beginning. An inspiring personality and a smart friend you always wished to have.

John S. Lee from Mix.Space was giving a talk on UX/UI design which has blown up my mind. The idea of personas is the next big thing I’ll incorporate in my pitches of literally any product! Many years of experience working at Bunz make John an incredibly interesting speaker everybody would be eager to learn from. And, apparently, Mix.Space is becoming your next app store in the nearest future!

Big thanks to the awesome organizer Stephanie Zhang who made the hackathon possible and made sure it runs smoothly and everybody has everything they need!

And, of course, people who made me feel so good, my teammates Patrick Louis and Aarushi Matur.

That was awesome!
