The DAO attack was the main reason why ethereum split into two. Unlike bitcoin and bitcoin cash that were split by the hard fork, but the old bitcoin remained the bitcoin. In ethereum situation the apposite happened. Ethereal become a newer chain while ethereal classic was renamed for the older chain.
