has come a long way and with popularity on the rise, many cities have now started using technology. Denver, a city in the U.S State of Colorado, decided to cash in on the technology, using it to and track votes during the upcoming municipal elections in May.
Denver announced that it would be implementing a program to enable overseas voters, active-duty military personnel, and their eligible dependents to vote using a -based smartphone app in partnership with Tusk Philanthropies and Voatz.
Voatz’s technology was previously used in West Virginia by active-duty military personnel during the state’s primary and general elections in 2018. Deputy Director of Elections at the Denver Office of Clerk and Recorder, Jocelyn Bucaro, said that the Denver Elections Division is known for making voting an easier and more transparent process for individuals through the use of technology. She added that participating in the pilot program was in line with their mission. She added,
“We believe this technology has the potential to make voting easier and more secure not only for our active duty military and overseas citizens, but also for voters with disabilities, who could potentially vote independently and privately using their phones’ assistive technology.”
In order to avail the program, eligible voters must fill in an absentee ballot request and finish the authentication process through the Voatz mobile application. If their request is approved, the eligible voters will be able to submit their ballot between March 23 and May 7, which is Denver’s election day.
Vance Brown, CEO of National Cybersecurity Center [NCC], who is also participating in the program’s pilot, is “excited to partner with the City/Country of Denver, Voatz and Tusk Philanthropies.” He added,
“This public/private partnership showcases how promoting innovative technologies, such as -based mobile voting, protects against cyber-attacks that negatively impact our world. The application of in our election system provides for secure, auditable, transparent and accurate counting of ballots and the increased integrity of our election system.”
The CEO added that the country as a whole might see more regular use of the technology once it has proven its effectiveness.
