Blockstream satellite broadcasts first message from mysterious bitcoin [btc] user

Cryptocurrency figures were sharing a sense of excitement January 24 after a mystery user broadcast a message on the bitcoin [BTC] blockchain via Blockstream’s satellite network.

‘Straight Out Of Bladerunner’

Blockstream, which launched its network of satellites to allow bitcoin [BTC] users to transact without an internet connection, has yet to provide official comment on the event, which developer grubles confirmed as genuine on Twitter.

Covering around two-thirds of the world’s surface as of December 2018, Blockstream’s satellites ultimately aim to open up the bitcoin [BTC] blockchain to anyone capable of operating a wallet.

In-keeping with the spirit of bitcoin [BTC], the message grubles discovered while checking his hardware was anonymous.

“It felt straight out of Bladerunner,” he commented.

The message consisted of several paragraphs – in the form of diary entries – to meet the required 1KB file size, its author explained. In it, they identified themselves only as a “developer from a post-Soviet state.”

“…I’m building my first Raspberry Pi Lightning node, and broadcasting messages from satellites, still feels surreal (at) times,” they wrote.

My dream is to accumulate 1 BTC, and I think that will be more than enough for the future.

The developer further asked for support but did not appear to include a bitcoin [BTC] or other cryptocurrency address.

bitcoin Beyond The Internet

Commenting on the message, Blockstream CEO Adam Back subsequently applauded the use of the satellite network.

“History is rising,” he tweeted.

Blockstream first launched its network earlier in 2018. The user-originated message was possible thanks to the release of a dedicated API this month.

Currently in beta, the implementation uses the Lightning Network testnet to pay fees, meaning the message also used testnet coins to broadcast itself. Blockstream says a mainnet transfer will occur following a “period of successful testing” of the API.

“All that is needed to receive a broadcast is a satellite dish (a TV satellite dish will suffice), a few low-cost components, and a computer,” the company explained about receiving messages last week.

Broadcasts can be received anywhere with a line of sight to one of our four geosynchronous satellites, completely free of charge.

Volatility has briefly returned to markets post-Christmas, bitcoin currently circling $15,200 according to Coinmarketcap’s average trading prices, up from $13,680 Monday but coming down from the day’s high of $15,700.

The move has dampened altcoins, with a mixed bag of gains and losses greeting investors today. Civic, which surprised by posting sudden huge advances from $0.70 to as high as $1.68 in the past 24 hours, has now deflated to around $0.87.

Having weathered a new round of bubble accusations last week as prices dipped below $13,000, bitcoin holders meanwhile are now “more bullish than ever.”

Those are the words of BitGo engineer Jameson Lopp, who led various high-profile supporters voicing their trust in bitcoin’s future and disregarding its current technical shortcomings.

“I’m more bullish on bitcoin today than I have been in the past 5 years. The developments underway that have been made public are only the tip of the iceberg,” Lopp wrote on Twitter Christmas Day.

McAfee: Technical Issues Are ‘Trivial’

Also leading the bull charge was John McAfee, who asserted the current status quo of the bitcoin network – a key factor behind criticism from bitcoin Cash (BCash) proponents – was “trivial.”

“I have been a technician all of my life, so if anyone knows, it is me,” he continued. “The world is waiting on consensus for the right solution. bitcoin is still the only guaranteed investment in the crypto world.”

McAfee added separately that by the end of 2018, bitcoin would be “ten times” its current price, still conservative within the context of his $1 million 2020 price target.

At the same time, the security expert’s recent investment tips for altcoin assets have been roundly lambasted online after his picks “almost fully retraced,” as one commentator described.
