Bitcoin is a ‘Glamorous’ Fad, Says Nobel Prize-Winning Economist

bitcoin may be heating up again, but 2013’s Nobel Prize-winning economist isn’t convinced that the first decentralized digital currency is as legitimate as many proponents think.

‘It’s Glamorous’

bitcoin has been all over the news since last year, with many pundits arguing whether or not the cryptocurrency is here to stay. One Nobel Prize-winning economist argues for the latter.

Robert Shiller, a professor of economics at Yale University and co-founder of the Case-Shiller Index who won the coveted award in 2013, toldCNBC‘s “Trading Nation:”

I’m interested in bitcoin as a sort of bubble. It doesn’t mean that it will disappear, that it’ll burst forever. It may be with us for a while […] To me, it’s interesting as another example of faddish human behavior. It’s glamorous.

Shiller also claims that bitcoin reminds him of the 17th Century’s tulip mania, one of history’s most famous bubbles — despite the fact that there are more differences than similarities between the two products.

Tulip fever

Still, the leading economist doesn’t think the bitcoin bubble is going to burst anytime soon. He explained:

I don’t mean to dismiss it. Some smart people went into these and other cryptocurrencies. But it’s a story that I think goes way beyond the merit of the idea. … It is more psychological than something that could be explained by the computer science department.

The psychological motivation behind Bitcoin investment stems from a lack of trust in world governments and traditional financial institutions — which is exactly why the digital currency was created in the first place. Explained Shiller:

Part of it is political. Economists tend to neglect the political side. There’s a big element of people [who] don’t trust the government anymore. They like the idea that this didn’t come from the government. It came from some real smart computer scientist. They like that. It’s a great story for today’s markets.

Bitcoin

In that respect, Bitcoin has already found success as a means of undermining traditional financial institutions, as a decentralized currency, and as a means of allowing for near-instantaneous peer-to-peer transfers of value without an intermediary.

Try that with tulips.

Bitcoin Price Watch; Looking For A Strong End To The Week

So here’s a look at what we’re going to do in the bitcoin price today. We’ve had a pretty darn good week so far, with price serving up a great combination of volatility and upside momentum. In many ways, that’s the perfect combination as it allows us to jump into plenty of breakout trades while also being able to stay in the trades for a sustained run.

If we get a continuation of this sort of action today, we can close out the week on a high.

Of course, if we don’t then we can adapt our strategy to ensure we don’t miss out on any potential opportunities just because we’re focusing too much on ideal positions.

So, with this all noted, let’s get some levels in place that we can use to jump in and out of the markets during the session today, whatever happens. As ever, take a quick look at the chart below before we get started. It’s a one-minute candlestick chart and it’s got our key range in green.

As the chart shows, the range we are going to use for the session today comes in as defined by support to the downside at 7327 and resistance to the upside at 7499. That’s a pretty wide range that we’ve got for today, so we can use intrarange if we get an opportunity. Long on a bounce from support, short on a correction from resistance.

For our breakout strategy, we’ll be jumping in long towards an immediate upside target of 7550. A stop on the trade at 7475 looks good.

Looking the other way, if we get a close below support, we’re going to get in short towards a downside target of 7280. A stop on this one somewhere in the region 7345 will ensure we are taken out of the trade in the event of a bias reversal.
