The Argentine journalists’ union CISPREN and the NEM Foundation have teamed up to develop a copyright solution in the digital age. The basis for this is to form the NEM Blockchain.

The digitization of society and media content posed new challenges to copyright. How can you do justice to the concept of intellectual property in a world where text, audio, image and video documents can be changed so easily? Ever since the work of Stuart Haber and Scott Stornetta, it has been known that cryptography can help to timestamp data, a type of digital fingerprint that uniquely identifies copyright.

The defense of intellectual authorship also plays an increasing role in journalism. Thus, the mass adaptation of the Internet has brought immense comfort for the research work. However, the growing speed of information dissemination is also creating an increasing copy-and-paste mentality. Fair enough, if one states his sources well. Even fairer if exclusive articles can be unambiguously assigned to their originator.

Like civil, just different

Probably the most prominent example of combining journalism and blockchain is provided by the Civil platform. This has already attracted well-known cooperation partners such as Forbes ashore. The ICO of the CVL token crashed, but Civil wants to start operations in February. The CVL token, which will apparently only have governance functionality, will then be sold indefinitely – until all 38 million units are out of print.

Argentine journalists now also want to bring their content to the blockchain. However, one wants to use an already existing block chain: NEM. The NEM Argentina Foundation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Córdoba Trade Union Press and Communication Union (CISPREN).

NEM and CISPREN are now working on a common blockchain-based solution for protecting journalistic content. Accordingly, each article should be stored on the blockchain and provided with an individual QR code and a digital signature. In order to ensure authenticity, each publication also receives a timestamp. Currently we are working on a proof of concept for the project.
