Amy’s Perspective – Alacris – Medium

Amy’s Perspective – Alacris – Medium

It’s finally here… ETHDenver! What an exciting day it was!! Hundreds, if not thousands, of fellow Ethereum enthusiasts and developers alike came together to be known for the next four days as “Bufficorns.”

One of our main goals for the week is to get to know as many of these fellow “bufficorns” as we can. Eth Conferences are a great opportunity to not only learn from some of the most innovative organizations and people in blockchain, but to learn what else is going on in the space…and to maybe get some of those great T-shirts, clothed for days! Shoutout to AAVE, Celer and NuCypher who really out did themselves this year on the shirts.

In all seriousness, what really gets us, at Alacris, excited at conferences is learning about all the other projects being created on the Blockchain and Ethereum. In the coming years, as more and more projects develop, partnerships will be crucial and it is refreshing to know one of the main values at ETHDenver is community, no gatekeepers, and no ego. It is all about working together to raise up the technology. As someone new to Blockchain and not knowing as much as others do, I have been welcomed with open arms to this community.

Besides the great come and go discussions and workshops on topics from security to marketing, day one kicked things off with opening ceremonies for the hackathon with an emphasis on social impact through Blockchain. Aya Miyaguchi, Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation, talked about the new vision of the organization. A shift that echoes one that is going on in blockchain itself, as well.

“We are building an ecosystem and at the Foundation.. we like to do things differently. The people at the foundation, when it was founded, were developers and researchers. But now, as the nature of open-source tech, that has changed and the entire ecosystem has gotten a lot bigger and with this change, the role of the foundation needs to shift. When we think about our focus… what are the things that only the ETHfoundation can do? A supporting role is what we can do. It is the time to talk about DApps that are realizing this vision.”

Some great messages to start off the weekend. Good luck to buidlers, we cannot wait to see the projects that come out of EthDenver!

For decades, science and academia have leveraged distributed computing to solve massive computational problems. Distributed grid computing schemes allow donors to volunteer their desktop computer’s idle resources toward scientific projects in physics, biology, and chemistry, where large amounts of parallel computing resources are necessary. Relying on software like BONIC, these networks provide features such as built-in fault tolerance and result verification. And with the proliferation of mobile and IoT, the potential for massively distributed grid networks has never been greater.

Gilles Fedak, a researcher at the French computer science research body Inria, joins us to discuss a new project which aims to build a high-performance distributed cloud infrastructure marketplace. Relying on mature grid computing technologies, iExec utilizes Ethreum to organize a peer-to-peer marketplace of computing resources, allowing anyone to rent their idle resources to grid networks. If it succeeds to execute on its vision, this game-changing project could revolutionize distributed computing through cost reduction and the commoditization of resources.

Topics discussed in this episode:

  • Gilles’ background as a distributed computing researcher
  • Distributed computing and it’s applications in science and industry
  • The problems we see in distributed computing networks
  • The iExec project and its vision for a distributed computing resource marketplace
  • How iExec works as an Ethereum smart contract
  • The different components and participants of iExec
  • The iExec token and upcoming crowds ale
  • The project’s business model and roadmap
