2019 The Year of IEO? – ZebraCrossing – Medium

2019 The Year of IEO? – ZebraCrossing – Medium

We have gone through a crypto summer (2017) and crypto winter (2018) where we see the price of Bitcoin reach a peak of almost $20,000/BTC in 2017 to a low of $3400/BTC in 2018. In the year of 2017, a total of 875 ICOs has raised a total amount of $6.2 billion USD, compared to 1258 ICOs in 2018 with total amount raised about $7.8 billion USD. Will year 2019 also see the continue rise of amount raised in ICO?

From 2017 to 2018, the majority of the ICOs are raised using smart contracts with Ethereum as the main source of payment, some are using proprietary wallets that accepts both BTC and ETH (and other popular crypto too). In 2017, it was as simple as sending ETH to a smart contract to purchase your tokens in ICO, and immediately you will receive your tokens. In 2018, things has changed. Most ICOs are required to do full KYC before a participant is allowed to contribute, and the release of tokens usually is not immediate. However, most ICOs are still using smart contract to purchase ICO by sending ETH (except some ICOs use a different platform) but now your wallet address need to be KYC before, or else, the sending of ETH will fail.

Come 2019, we beginning to see some changes to the ICO landscape, due to poor performance of ICO in 2018. Binance is among the first to introduce IEO (Initial Exchange Offering) back in 2017, and in year 2019 Binance starts to relaunch its launchpad with BTT (Bittorent token), which generated lots of hype and interest from the crypto community and it was a major success. Now with 2 continue successes of IEO from Binance (BTT and FET), Huobi, OKeX, Bittrex, Kucoin, etc all are rushing to join the IEO mania. So will year 2019 be the year of IEO? I interviewed a few influencers and here are their response with the same question “What is your comment that year 2019 is the year of IEO?

Illia @ICO Analytics
I will divide this question into three blocks:
What we had before?
In 2018 several exchanges launched Initial Exchange offering activity. Coinsuper, Ethfinex, Bgogo, Liquid and some other exchanges were not really successful in this efforts.

And it was not really popular among TOP exchanges to support public sales due to high risks and responsibility for something they can not control. But the situation has changed. Market is in downtrend. Target audience is not active anymore and we’ve noticed decrease in trading volume. Binance had a solution. They’ve provided not only fundraising services but also supported with market making.

2. Where are we now?
This year we’ve started with Binance Launchpad relaunch. They’ve successfully closed fundraising and listed Bittorrent and Fetch. Both projects at the moment trading much above ICO price. Celer is the third one to be launched in March on Binance Launchpad. So it is definitely ICO market reanimation. Having in mind results of Binance Launchpad the interest in IEO increased significantly among retail investors. Result — big exchanges entering the segment.
3. What should we expect in the next months?
We already see other exchanges entering the market. BitMax successfully closed fundraising of DOS Network. It will get listed on March 14. Bittrex announced first initial exchange offering on March 15. Okex and Huobi already confirmed that they will have their own IEO platforms. We’ve had successful examples on Binance Launchpad. But will it be the same success story with other exchanges? We will see soon. I am sure that this piece of cake is pretty big and we will see some other great examples. To fail with first IEO means that nobody will participate in other sales on this platform. This will influence an image and credibility as well as will affect volumes and number of users.

Mark @CryptoDiffer
IEO hype will bring us to the same situation as ICO gold rush back in 2017–2018. The concept hasn`t changed but the quality of projects even got worse, they don`t need to care about marketing and community building anymore, the famous exchange is already enough. The next situation will be common in the next few months: the exchange does the ANN about random under the radar project doing an IEO and in 5 days 1k investors from all over the world are ready to invest. I want to ask the obvious questions:
Will this project be alive in a few years? — probably, I would say 50/50.
Will the token have any value in the future? — very doubtful. People will dump it one upon another in the next few months to the moment it will reach zero.
But, yeah let`s be honest, the next month or few months can be a very harvesting period for those who did their homework on the mistakes done during the previous cycle.
Don`t be greedy, enjoy the moment.

It’s definitely an interesting trend that is currently getting traction, especially during this bear market. I think it will definitely be one of the main ways to receive funding in 2019, although there will always be projects doing it on their own.
