There are actually polar ice core samples that show smelting of silver ore (presumably by the Romans) from the 2nd century BC to the middle of the 2nd century AD actually measurably raised levels of certain pollutants. The same levels are not seen again until the levels of the ice cores representing the late 18th century AD, the industrial revolution in Western Europe.
